Archaeology of Central and South America: 

The Aztecs, the Incas, and the Mayans

Dr. David Lipovitch (Harvard, '99) is an archeologist 

with an impressive career and a passion for teaching.
His knowledge of history and extensive experience in the
field of archelogy makes him well-suited to lead
 
Archaeology of Central and South America in Fall 2021
at The LIFE Institute. Students will join him on a
journey through the archeological discoveries
that contribute to our understanding of the Aztecs,
the Incas, the Mayans and their predecessors.

About Dr. Lipovitch

 

Extensive Education in His Field

Dr. Lipovitch earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology (Archaeology) and Syro-Palestinian 
Studies from the University of Toronto in 1989. He then moved from the Toronto area to
pursue graduate studies and earn his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Archaeology from
Harvard University (1999).

His dissertation examined the animal remains from the Achaemenid Persian Period at the
archaeological site of Tel Ashkelon in Israel.

 

An Exciting Career in Archeology

Dr. Lipovitch began his career in archeology in the late 1980s where he worked in Toronto for
one of the first contract archeology firms in Ontario. Since then, he has been active with
archaeological excavations in southern Ontario, Israel, Jordan, the Republic of Georgia and
Turkey.

"I worked for about a decade at the Philistine site of Tel Ashkelon on the coast of Israel, and
I have been working for the last 18 years with the University of Toronto's excavations at the
site of Tell Tayinat in Turkey. I also work with projects in Jordan and Georgia," shares
Dr. Lipovitch.

 

A Passion for Teaching

Dr. Lipovitch began lecturing publicly in the early 1990s. He currently teaches at Wilfred
Laurier University in history and archaeology departments. He is also a Research Affiliate
at the University of Toronto.

"I am currently teaching undergraduates at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and seniors
at LIFE and the Betel Centre. I am also a regular participant in graduate seminars at the
University of Toronto," shares Dr. Lipovitch.

 

Joining The LIFE Institute as an Instructor

Dr. Lipovitch began teaching at The LIFE Institute in 2014 after being introduced to the program by his former student.

"I enjoy interacting with the diverse students and knowing that I am helping older adults remain mentally active and engaged. The Institute is a great way for everyone to continue lifelong learning, exercise their brain and meet interesting people," says Dr. Lipovitch.
